The Founding Mothers of LOAF are Ruth Sathre (nurse), Jane Corinne (social worker), Bonnie Kell (gerintologist), Barbara Brumfield (psychotherapist), Linda Snook (certified counselor), and myself. I was a generation older than these women, but they had the knowledge of community necessary to start a group of this kind.
Some of the issues addressed by this committee were:
- AGE OF PARTICIPANTS - we started off as LOAFF - Lesbians over Age Fifty-five, but soon changed to fifty
- NAME FOR THE GROUP - LOAFF and then LOAF
- AMOUNT OF STRUCTURING - too many rules kills a group. It was decided to keep it open-ended and let participating women guide the group. Needs and ideas have changed over the years
- SAFE HAVEN FOR MEETINGS - a place not identifiable as a Gay place. So many women of this generation were closeted. A place near public transportation. Meet during the day as many did not drive after dark. And meet on Sunday to accommodate working women
- NEWSLETTER - one every month to be mailed before the end of each month with news and activities of interest to the women
- DUES - $2.00 per month per woman, and free to women who could not afford dues. This has never changed
- CREATIVE PUBLICITY - a flyer was developed and distributed to LGBT organizations, counselors, and bars. We knew the women we could best serve were not going to be in the bars. it was going to be word-of-mouth contact
